’m having carb issues
2000 honda shadow 600 vlx
I just bought her and she was running terrible, guy had an open exhaust with no jet work. I did a bunch of modifications to the bike, re jetted the carbs and now I'm ready for my first start and ride.
i have a velocity stack and boot burner pipes
Ran good for 10 min, well a tad rich but running well
Then the black smoke got thick
Running crazy rich.
Struggles to idle
Kept turning off
Engine surging
Fire coming out of the exhaust on revs
My set up is
148 main jet
48 idle jet
1 shim
Screw 2.5 turns out
I removed the petcock and all the emissions hoses.
I just ordered a fuel filter.
Where should i start? The idle jet minimum plug is in
Also
With the long handle mixture screw
Should i be using the stock rubber ring and the spacer? Or just slide your screw in? I didn't get another Oring or washer in the kit.
Any help would be appreciated
Having similar issues on my 01 750. I'd start with checking float making sure the needle and seat is seating properly. On mine it was when I had carbs off and blowing through a hose but when on the rear carburetor wasn't sealing. I had to go back to the original needle and seat I tried polishing it but it didn't help. Not surprised about the flames because the exhaust is so short. The mixture screw, on my kit I reused the factory shims mine had two per screw but my kit had the proper o rings so you probably want to reach out to customer service. As far as it running and dying after 10 minutes I'm still working on that mine is doing the same thing only conclusion I can come to is the exhaust is heating up the intake on the carbs and boiling the fuel. I'm trying something on mine and will post what happens as I figure it out.
@Maurizio Fantauzzi if you didnt receive certain parts with your kit, reach out to customer service online, theyll take care of you.
if it ran for 10 minutes then had issues id lean towards a fuel issue.
1. did you plug the vacuum port thats left after you remove the auto fuel petcock?
2. if you dont have a fuel filter, its likely you could get a lot of crap into the carb and this could cause the float valve to remain open allowing too much fuel into the engine.
3. polish your float needle seat. get some mothers mag and lauminum wheel polish and some automotive wooden shaft cleaning swabs. like q tips, put them in a drill and get the swab in the needle seat and spin that swab to polish the seat. when youre done, clean it very thoroughly with carb acetone first and then carb cleaner, to remove any residue from the polishing.
4. the float may be installed incorrectly, is sticking or got bent and is no longer holding the correct float height.
5. Smoke and flames primarily from one exhaust pipe: investigate that cylinder’s plug, cap, wire, coil, and ensure you have a good hot spark. A coil or ignition component failing after heating for ten minutes could also produce misfiring, raw fuel in the exhaust, black smoke, and flames. I would investigate that only after confirming the carb is not physically overflowing.
and lastly, If the oil level has risen or the oil smells strongly like gasoline, it needs to be changed after the flooding problem is corrected. Continued running can dilute the oil and wash lubrication from the cylinder walls.
@TJ which vacuum port are you talking about?
fuel filter is installed.
getting a fluttering idle at low speeds,
top end runs well
@Maurizio Fantauzzi theres a vacuum port on your rear cylinder. a hose goes form the port to the auto fuel petock. if you dont plug this with a bolt you will have a bad time.
