Bike dies with choke in

  • I’m really hoping you guys can give me some help or point me in the right direction. I’ve spent the last few days trying to tune my 2000 Honda shadow vlx600 single carb with the performance kit. I’ve ran through so many different variations and tests and I don’t know where to go from here. I’ve spent hours researching, watching the videos, reviewing the 23 page tuning book and here’s the issue I keep having.

Soon as I push the choke in, the bike dies.

I have the velocity stack on the carb and an after market open exhaust. I’m at 4,300 feet elevation.

I started with both the smallest jets and the 2 shims. The bike didn’t even want to run.

I took the shims out, did new plugs, fresh oil and filer, and fresh coolant just to have a fresh start.

I took the carb out. Checked all seals. And it ran again. Got to temp, put the choke in and it died. Mind you all while messing with the air/fuel mix screw. Trying not to go more than 3.5-4 turns out.

Tried both pilot jets in the kit with the same result. Went back to the stock 45 pilot jet and put the shims back in. Again checking all seals and ensuring my air/fuel mix screw had the right order of spring, washer, o ring.

It idles nice. Soon as I put the choke in it fuckin bogs and dies. I’ve had the carb on and off 10 plus times and I know I should only be messin with the pilot jets so I feel I’ve exhausted all options.

I’ve checked the caps make sure they are tight, no leaks in my diaphragm or intake. Tight coupler fitting from intake to carb etc.

any advice would be greatly appreciated.

  • @Raceroo FIRST Did the bike run before you did this?

  • @TJ yes it did! Ran well. And even now it idles good all until the choke goes in.

  • @TJ any ideas on some things I could try out?
    Thanks!!
