running rich after tune

  • i recently installed the max performance kit and boot burner exhaust on my vt600. i started with the #48 pilot jet, then went down to a #45, then a #42. it has been running rich regardless of what pilot jet i have in. it idles rough and low even with the idle screw all the way out. i set the air/fuel mixture screw to 2 1/2 turns out each time i went down a jet size. if i move the mixture screw in or out it doesnt seem to help no matter if its 1 turn out or 5. i checked the spark plugs each time i lowered a pilot jet size and they were black each time no matter the size. do i have to put the stock jet back in? could something in the carb be leaking causing more fuel flow? any info is appriciated.

  • Update: I ordered pizza and that's when I realized I've been changing the main jet. But I did install the #48 pilot jet so should I go back down to the #45? Also why did my bike seem to be running the same no matter what size main jet I put in?

  • Update: I found that it was the diaphragm an jet needle causing the problem. Im not sure if I messed something up when installing but it was causing too much fuel to go through. Make sure your diaphragm is seated correctly and everything is in place right.

I live in Pa at an average elevation or 368' above sea level. I'm running a #145 pilot jet with a #43 main jet and my air/fuel screw is 2 turns out. Hopes this helps someone idk 😂

  • @Corey Wendling you have a vacuum leak. or your slides are stuck in the lifted position or the needle isnt in the needle jet.

  • @Corey Wendling i see you discovered what causes issues in 98% of peoples installs... User Error LOL everyone wants to blame me saying their kit isnt working and it usually boils down to an improper install. It can be a little overwhelming especially if its your first time, but You learned something really valuable when it comes to diagnosing!... sometimes you NEED to walk away from the project, order a pizza and give the problem some time to breathe! Well done good sir!!! Enjoy The ride!
