1997 vt1100 spirit no start after carb rejet, velocity stacks

  • Hey all! I recently rebuilt my vt1100 carbs with the max performance carb kit, and velocity stacks. I have the lowest sizes of the jets in the kit, and I am getting a no start. I can get it to run for a few seconds on ether. I have compression, spark, and fuel. My spark plugs are not a reliable source of rich or lean, as my bike burns a little bit of oil. It just turns over and over, Ive messed with the air fuel screws from 1 turn out to 4 turns out. Two shims on each needle, took off all the emissions and vac system, plugged the carb vac ports. I would think it's running super lean, if it won't start on its own pilot jets, and only consistent runs off of starting fluid. But, I can't be for sure because the plugs are dark from oil. I'm at 1k feet elevation, so nothing crazy. I'm out of ideas! Anyone have any ideas or recommendations?

  • @Matty Does it run better on "choke"? Are the carb boots to engine leaking? Set the pilot scews at 2-1/2 turns out. Is the idle screw out far enough? Go through the carbs again, check everything with a fine tooth comb. Throw new spark plugs in it and make sure your gas isn't old. You got this!

  • It doesn't run at all, choke or not on its own power. Only runs on the amount of ether I put in the stacks. New carb boots as well, I feel like if the boots were bad it'd run poorly, but not not even fire up. Idle screw is pretty far in, further than what I had it at pre rejet. I'll pull the carbs and check, maybe the floats are stuck or something. I'll keep you updated!
