Fuel spitting out of velocity stack

  • So I have a 2005 VLX 600 with the Magnus upsweeps, TJs velocity stack, and TJ's performance kit with the long handle air fuel mix screw. I am running a 48 pilot, 148 main, and 2 shims on the needle. I am currently experiencing a weird problem where when I am on the throttle I feel fuel spitting out of the velocity stack and hitting my leg. It's not a lot and I can only feel it when riding in shorts (stupid to ride in shorts I know, but it's Florida, it's hot, and I only ride a mile down the road to work in shorts).

I have tried trimming the fuel by tightening the air mix screw but it doesn't change anything. It is probably a little rich as the plugs are pretty black (though the spark section of the plug is a good color), and the mpg is terrible, but it starts and runs great.

Should I try removing one shim from the needle, or backing down the main jet to a 145? Or could it be the float?

The bike was a barn find with 400 miles on it, but all the components in the carb seemed fine when I was taking it apart to tune it. This is the 3rd VLX 600 I've bobbed with the same parts, but the first time I've experienced this.

  • @Joe Delligatti if changing the carb does nothing, you likely have a spark issue. get new plugs, wires and caps ( we have an ignition tune up kit on the site - t.ly/_WF9D ) try that, if you havent replaced all that stock stuff, you need ot anyways. if that doesnt remedy the issue, test your coils. and ensure you are getting big fat spark for each spark plug.
    also, adjust the valves.

  • Alright, brother. I will give that a shot. Thanks!
