Head Gasket leak?

  • Howdy all! Been riding my '03 VLX600 (only 2,500 miles on the clock) and I've noticed some oil or similar liquid (not coolant) leaking out from under the two bolts on top of my front cylinder. Doesn't leak if I keep the RPM's on the low end. It's a black grimy oil even though the oil in the pan is brand new. Any tips?

  • @Sam Young pictures please

  • It happened... my brother was driving it and revvved it out and BOOM! Oil everywhere... the head cover bolt is now backed out and is tight.... wondering if my bike is totaled, which is crazy bc it's got less than 3k miles on the clock!

  • This is the source of the oil no doubt, I can lift the head off the gasket a quarter inch! But I'd like to find out why it did this, overpressured? Did the bolt back out simply due to vibration?

  • @Sam Young bro... your head cover bolt is not seated... yes oil will come ouit of it. you need to loosen both sides a litle bit and slightly move the head cover so both bolts thread in all the way. And they dont need to be cranked down with gorilla stength. i bet they were just loose and vbibration mad eit worse.

  • @TJ thanks man, I checked the internals, everything looks pristine! I re-seated the head and tightened down the bolts properly. It took 2 quarts of oil and then a little more to get it just under the top line on the dip stick🤦🏻‍♂️. Bike runs great! I appreciate the help!

  • @Sam Young youre welcome!
