I have a 1988 vlx400 with the 5 speed gearbox, I am thinking of swapping the engine for the 600cc but I am unsure if the current gearbox would fit on to the 600 engine.
Has anyone done this or know what the out come is?
@Shane Keats what country are you in? youll have to be a bit more specific on what youre trying to do, or maybe you could post some pics =) .
The vlx600 and 400 steed have the transmission and engine as one unit, the transmission or gearbox are not divirced form the engine like a big twin. the 400 steed internals are not compatible with the 600 internals, if i am not mistaken ( which i could be off here) but the internals are shaped differently. and the case is made differently. Also, the 5th gear isn't that great. it's not a true 5th gear, its actually the 3rd gear split in half because the average riding speeds of the countries where the 400 steed was sold are more suited to a split 3rd gear. In america we have stupid highway speeds of 65-80 mph average so splitting the 3rd gear just meant blowing past it more frequently.
Im In Australia, i didnt know they are one unit, good to know that.
In Aus we can only go a max speed of 110km without breaking speed laws.
Do you know if the external parts ie, exhaust, air filter and forks are compatible between the two sizes?
I watch you quiet a bit on youtube man. very helpful and informative.
Thanks mate 👍🤘😎
@Shane Keats It's hard for me to say with great confidence, what will and wont fit. im fairly certain 99% of the components are identical save for the cylinder, pistons, rings, the valves and things like that. if you have a service manual or owners manual that would really help me out a lot!
