Howdy! I have a beauty of an '03 VLX600 with only 2k miles on the clock! Wasn't run much but was well taken care of. My problem is this, if you divide your throttle into 4 sections (1 being idle, and 4 being wide open) then at #2, my bike will sputter and die mainly on take off from a stop. If it's hot, I will take off from a stop pretty ok, but I notice a small lack of power on the low end of the power band through all gears. Am I due for a carb rebuild? I may hold off until I can by a TJBC performance kit. The bike idles fine even cold, and past throttle position #2 it eccelerates just fine through throttle positions #3 & #4 (wide open). If there's a quick fix I'd love to know!
bike is 100% stock
@Sam Young if you havent rebuilt the carbs,, all of this is an absolutely moot point. you could have vacuum leaks, all kinds of crap. i honestly wouldnt even attempt to do anything until you actually rebuild, replace the intake boots, get new spark plugs, ignition wires, resistor caps, all that stuff.
Hey TJ! The previous owner had a lot of basic maintenance done to it. New plugs, new hoses etc. He also had a fuel filter installed, which I'm not sure if that's actually needed or not, it's ugly as sin. I've got one of your performance rebuild kits in the cart waiting on my next paycheck! Quick question, you only have one video showing you taking the carb and EPA junk off a VLX600(that I could find), but it's a dual carb, and mine is a single. Is there any real difference? Thanks!
@Sam Young I dont care what a previous owner tells me, i approach every bike like someone abused and neglected it. Assuming someone did something or even did a good job can put you on the side of the road calling a tow truck or worse, rubber side up!
basically you can remove all the crap thats not fuel or coolant. theres a coolant line that goes form your intake to the carb then to the radiator, the Y thats in the carb can be removed and you can connect the nipple on the radiator to the nipple on the intake if you want. They dont have to go into the carb. =)( hope this helps! feel free to post pictures up!
Hey TJ! Received your performance rebuild kit in the mail today, and just finished the rebuild! My original problem was a fouled jet. I've since rebuilt with a velocity stack and pipes and am currently tuning. Will share pics in a bit!
@Sam Young yeah man, honestly i will never re-use jets if i rebuild, unless im doing a rebuild for something like a slide diaphragm or just upgrading hardware. im glad to hear you solved the issue!
