'03 VT750 ACE Speedometer

  • I've been bobbing my ACE and due to NY laws I need a speedometer. I bought and will be installing TJ's peanut gas tank so I'm looking to swap the stock speedometer with an handlebar-mounted or frame side-mounted speedometer. The stock speedometer utilizes an electronic sending unit mounted to the speedometer drive hub, however I would like to swap this with the mechanical cable.

I've learned through my research that the speedometer drive hub for the 600 and the 750 are the same. The 600 uses a mechanical speedometer, so it seems to me that this is very possible. In my search for a speedometer I came across some nice possible options that are 2240:60 from the company Drag Specialties.

My issue is it appears all of the possible options I like (simple analog speedometer with built in odometer and no indicator lights) they all seem to be intended for a Harley. So, my worry is the female thread on the back of the speedometer will be "standard" and my shadow cable will be "metric". I'm looking for a good quality, simple aftermarket speedometer "gloss black" if possible, mechanically driven and compatible with a Shadow.

Any input or advice I greatly appreciate. Thank you and TJ I'm a big fan of your content and thanks to your ingenuity I'm building one sick bike!

*Side note, i've thought about the use of a GPS speedometer but the options I find have too much going on for the simple look im going for. Also, thought of getting a used 600 speedometer and painting gloss black but I'm thinking to go with that as a last resort if I cant find what I'm looking for*

  • @Brandon Storley you are correct, many of the threads do not fit, or are what i call "chinesium thread" which is halfway in between any actual thread on this plane of existence. your best bet here is to get the 60o speedometer box for the wheel, the 600 speedo cable and a vt600 speedometer.  i do have some speedometers on hand if you are interested in picking one up.

The gps options are often built into a phone and i know a few dudes who have literally told a cop that their phone has a speedometer function and thats what they use since "the old one broke" 😎
i have gone down this road a few times and it was only to try and satisfy a customer. i have spent way too much time and money attemopting to develop speedometer options when 90% of the people out there dont want one or dont care ( i am in this group LOL) but even if you need a speedometer for inspections, like in texas, a lot of guys just slap a speedo on once a year and they're done.
if you want to try and reinvent the thing that tells you what your wheel is doing, enjoy! But if you want a straighforward solution, a VT600 speedo setup will keep your bike legal.
