Possible coil issues?

  • Hi there,

So I have this "barn" find 92 vt600c, it had been sat under a cover in my mum's neighbours garden 15 years, been through all the English weathers, I managed to clean it up get it all pretty much working, it does run and fires up on the button! The issue I'm having is after letting it warm up and gping for a ride after about 700 metres it will then cut out and won't start up again until it has cooled down again, my stepdad thinks it could be the coils? After cleaning upany advice would be great!

  • @Nathan good before runing a bike thats sat for YEARS you really should lubricate the cylinders and upper end. if you run the bike after siutting that long, thertes no more oil in the top end of that machine. the cylinders are dry as a bone, the valve train is also dry. all the ruber valve seals are dry.  starting the bike dry with a lot of dry metal components touching... this very quickly scores the cylinders.  i see it all the time.
please flush and change the oil asap, new filter as well, flush and burp and fill the coolant system, change all plugs.
jumping to coils is a bit of a wild conclusion if the bike does run. id ignore that idea for n ow, they dont just go bad from sitting.
i would strongly suggest you pull the carb, order a complete carb rebuild kit with an new intake boot. DONT SKIP THAT! your intake boot is way past its prime and one y9ou pull the carb it will not go back into place and seal. trust me on this. rebuild the carb, flush the gas tank and get fresh gas and go from there.

  • Thanks for the advice!

I did actually do all of this apart from the first part about lubricating the cylinders,

Oil change and filter done, carbs fully rebuilt, tank flushed out, and coolant done too, everything seems to work and rides smooth, just after a short while seems to cut out, this is why my stepdad thought coils,

Sorry should have put more info into this haha!
