I got a 2002 Honda Shadow VT 1100 Spirit last year. I put on backdraft exhaust, velocity stacks, and bought the carb rebuild kit to rebuild the carbs. I rebuilt and cleaned the carbs. I changed the intake boots. I finally finished putting it all together, added gas, and it wouldn't start. I tried putting the choke on, and it started. But as soon as I would rev the throttle, even slightly, it dies. And if I turn off the choke it dies.
Since the carbs were cleaned and rebuilt, I didn't think it was that. So I changed the spark plugs, and that didn't work.
The only things I can think is to clean the carbs again and look at the intake boots. Probably buy new intake boots.
Is there anything else I should look at? Has anyone else had this problem?
Thanks
@David The tuning kit includes MULTIPLE jets to tune. it is not a slap it in and it goes kind of kit. we include multiple jets so you can tune for your elevation. if it starts with choke then the pilot circuit ius too lean and or your idle is too low.
@TJ I believe I used the biggest jets, but I'll make sure when I take out the carb and take it apart. I live in Tucson which is like, 2200-2400 ft about sea level, something like that.
Something I didn't mention in the original post, the rear exhaust pipe doesn't get as hot as the front exhaust. Like, I can grab the rear exhaust pipe, but cannot grab the front.
@David thats not a jetting problem. if one pipe doesnt get hot then you are either not getting any fuel at all or youre not getting spark to that cylinder
To close this post out, I finally checked the jets and both pilot jets were clogged. I don't know why that was causing one exhaust pipe to not get hot.
I was hoping to avoid taking out the carb because it's a pain on the 1100, and I'd never even run it after putting in the new jets. Also, I have a fuel filter so I assumed it would stop any gunk getting through. I looked at the filter and it was full of rust(?) chips and that made me re-clean the carb. And I replaced the fuel filter.
Runs great now! The pipes TJ makes sound amazing.
@David Well im glad you figurd it out dude!
If your filter was full of crap you should really clean and re-seal that fuel tank my man. otherwise youre looking at this issue happening once again.
