97 vt600 runs rich

  • Bought a 97 vt600 & it already has stacks & exhaust but previous owner said he put bigger jets in but runs rich, so I took the carb off & found both front & rear, pilot & main jetted at 45. Is this the reason it's running rich?

  • @Bradley There are more factors involved than just stacks and exhaust with your rich condition.

    - Exhaust diameter, lenght, with or without baffels?

    - Do your stacks have TJ screens?

    - What elevation are you riding?

    - Are your carbuerator float height set correctly?

    - Carburetor in general; diaphrams, vents, needle heights, emulsion tubes clogged?

    - What is the condition of your ignition system? Plugs wires, coils, grounds?

    - Have you checked the valves?

I'm sure I'm missing more but you have a lot of things to check. The VLX 600 is a great bike to learn on. TJ has assembeled a lot of good information on his site. If it were me, and it was when I got my 600, take the carbs apart and rebuild them. Study videos and read all you can before your start. Its actually easy. The previous owner of my bike said his good friend had just rebuilt the carbs before I bought it, yet I still found a few issues. Nothing major but I'm a perfectionist at things. Go through them and verify everything. Once you are confident that the carbs are perfect with whatever jet size you find, then start changing other things. You can still check the other factors I listed and eliminate them or compare them to your carbs. You will get this and become the expert in your neighborhood.

I learned bikes a long time ago. Started out on a Honda CX500. I've worked on just about every make and model out there and they are all basically the same when it comes down to it. Have fun!
