First Time Buyer

  • Hi!

I'm a new rider (just got my license yesterday). I have a total of 3 days on a motorcycle, all of which came from the 2 days at the range for the BRC (I had to retest). With that said, I'm looking to buy a motorcycle, specifically a cruiser.

Now, I'm not a tall man, standing 5'7. Being new and inexperienced, I know I want something used and with mid controls. I sat on a Indian Scout and didn't realize how awkward it felt with my legs outstretched and I could only imagine sliding back as my newbish hands give the throttle a little too much twist. Other than that, I loved how low it sat. I also have friends that have said don't get something too small, you'll outgrow it in a month. I also looked at the price of some Harleys that are +10 years old and my butt starts to hurt right around the wallet area.

Finally, after about a week of scraping the Internet and going to all the local dealers in my area, I've come across two potential motorcycles I'm considering. First is a 2015 Harley Davidson Street 750 for about $3,800. Seller says perfect condition, never laid down, aftermarket exhaust. The other is a 2016 Indian Scout for $6,900 from a dealer. I found a mid controls conversion kit online that I asked if I got it, would they install it and they said it wouldn't be a problem.

I'd like to stay under $8,000 but want something I can enjoy. I will be riding in city traffic and some interstate riding in the future once I'm comfortable.

    What do you guys think?

  • @JoeSkull i think you're overthinking the mid controls thing brother LOL!

  • Update

So I went with the Harley Davidson Street 750. I laid it down once already the day after I got it. Hip is still sore sometimes but no serious damage to me or the bike.

It's been fun though. I love riding, whether solo or with my son. Just around town a little, I'm taking it slow but if I had things my way, I'd ride all the time. It feels like being 12 all over again on my bicycle and just exploring the world.

  • @JoeSkull hell yeah man! i hope you have the best fucking time! theres two kinds of riders - those who have gone down and those who WILL LOL!

Always ride like you are invisible, never assume anything on the road and youll go far my friend!

  • Just doing an update:

My youngest son and I rode quite a bit togther whenever I was home from work. I loved the ride time together. Unfortunately, he went down on his bike (thank God he's ok). His bike needs some repair but it's been a lesson for him about follow on distance and being in too much of a hurry.

My oldest son is going for his endorsement this weekend. I think he saw the fun his brother and I had and I'm glad he wants to ride with us. I told him if he got his motorcycle license, I'd give him my Harley Street 750. It gave me a reason to buy myself a new bike 😆. I bought an Indian Scout Sixty Classic in  beautiful frost silver. I love how smooth it rides and relaxed it feels. I'm also super excited for the three of us to ride together.
