Why the shadow 600?

  • It seems like the shadow 600 and 750 are the most popular to mod. Is there a reason for that over the shadow 1100 or Honda magna 750? Is it just because the 600 is so cheap to start?

Yes there is a reason they are more popular than 1100 or the Magna 750. The Magna 750 was somewhat of an experimental design in what I would call a transitional phase for Honda it was a attempt at a sportbike engine in a cruiser type frame What one might call a Muscle Cruiser, You had sport bike type performance with a little more relaxed riding position one thing that set the Magna apart from a lot of other Cruisers was the very quick acceleration from idle.  all that being said the carburetor set up on these bikes was nothing short of nightmarish all the carbs attached to a base plate which then went to the intake plenum and installing and uninstalling that was no easy task especially if you're dealing with rubber that's a little older it is very difficult to remove the carburetors and tune them now the stock tuning on the Magnas made them very desirable because you didn't really have to do anything to these bikes and they performed really well right off the showroom floor. Now a complicated carburetor setup is a major barrier to customization.  if it takes a lot of work to get the carbs off a bike just to change one part of the tuning circuits, then folks are likely to get discouraged.  the frame itself is A dual backbone much like many other Hondas and the frame design itself does not lean towards an easy few steps to get the bike looking real good additionally it's a 4 cylinder engine so you do have four exhaust pipes to work with it's a more complicated machine than a vt600 or a vt750 which are both two cylinder engines and they have either one carburetor or two and are much more simple when it comes to removing and installing those carburetors additionally the frame and design of both the 60750 are very ready to be chopped and with some slight modifications turned into a very custom looking bike.

the other thing that makes the Magna not a desirable there's not a lot of aftermarket support and there are many stock Parts which are no longer available so if you are trying to rebuild one it may take a very long time to find replacement components if you can find them at all.

Now on to the vt1100 the reason this is not as desirable as a 600 or 750 is again coming down to frame design and carburation. the carburetors on the vt1100 must be removed vertically between the backbones it is a complicated process just to get to a point where you can begin to figure out how to remove the carburetors the vt1100 does not have an exposed air filter on either side of the bike instead Honda opted to run the air filter underneath the seat which makes no sense to me then they ran the intake plenum up towards the carburetors but built the frame so that the frame became the intake plenum this creates complexity if one is trying to customize the bike because you do not have a traditional location for a rear tank mounting spot or a solo seat mounting location The frame again comes into play as to why it is less popular model for chopping the backbone is over 10 in wide at its widest point the stock tank is pretty big and it needs to be of a considerable size to support a larger engine to go longer distances the tank is about as narrow as it can be without being deformed by the shape of the backbone that it must sit down over the top of.  It's a larger bike with a little more complicated of a system than a 600 750 while still relatively basic it's a far cry from the Simplicity of a 600. And again as with the Magna  VFf750, do the vt1100s do not have a lot of aftermarket support.  in the coming months and year we do hope to offer some more components for the 1100s to change that however the 1100 as you mentioned yes costs more than a vt600, and  a Magna vf750 is typically going to be more expensive than a vt600 or vt750 . And as I mentioned the inverse of the aftermarket support is true with the vt600 and vt750,  there is a lot of aftermarket parts that can be from TJ brutal customs  for both  of these bike models.
