I just pushed this bike 5 miles home and well I need some direction, no brakes, shifter linkage is off, no battery, tank has some rust, wheels are lil crusty but im motivated. I have no idea if she'll run and the title is lost. I know I have a lot of replacing to do but what should I immediately do to get her running reliably? Is the stock carb junk? Any emissions bs i have to cut out?
She will run again, SHE WILL
Alrighty!
Probably good to start and check a few things before anything else.
1. 1988, so no emissions bs, and it's a dual carb model in that case.
2. These carbs are just fine, but they probably need cleaned given the state of the bike.
3. Does it turn over at all? (will probably have to charge or replace the battery first for that)
4. Tank cleaning is pretty easy, just regular white vinegar usually does the trick, just make sure to fill it all the way, let it sit a while, rinse with water and baking soda, then water and then let it dry completely.
After that it's gonna be a matter of: AFCS (air, fuel, compression, spark)
But there's way too many good tutorials on youtube covering these for me to sit here and explain any of it haha.
TJBC has some on it, Mustie1 also does great videos on getting old stuff running.
@Smeltie man I appreciate the response! I working on the afcs process now!
But Im glad there's no emissions bs, I completely forgot to mention that the guy didnt have a key for the dang bike! Im trying to trickle charge the battery now but in the meantime should or can I even jump the bike with the solenoid like you would on an old truck or should I wire in another form of ignition? I was thinking about utilizing the panel off one of my generators to atleast try and get her to turn but if I can just jump the solenoid with a dang screwdriver it'd save me some time. Is it safe for the bikes electrical? I just wanna see she aint locked up before I go and get fancy on shit and start replacing everything
And I discovered the fuel tank has a hole and also the fuel cap has a dang key lock on it which I tried to break to no avail so im thinking cut it off and weld a new cap but makes more sense just to buy the peanut tank from TJBC
@FloridaNomad you dont want to try ands turn it on. you need to pull the plugs, squirt some engine oil in there and let it sit for a day, pull the timing inspection cap and turn the engine BY HAND. if you can get a borespose ion the cylinders before any of that and see if you find rust, debris, moisture etc.
if youre trying to charge the old battery, just dont, throw it away, get a new one. these bikes do not function on old or drained/compromised batteries.
you are correct its much easier to get a peanut tank from me.
you can wire in a push button for the start and a toggle for the keyswitch. easy
10-4 I appreciate the guidance, reckon im a little too excited about her turning over on her own and not considering enough how long shes been sittin dry And what thats done internally. Going into this dry aint gunna be fun for either of us...
I oughtta know better seeing i watch everything you post and then some
But I ordered The bore scope and it is on its way, so ill post the pictures here tomorrow once I get a look inside and go from there.
@FloridaNomad sounds good man! yeah its hard to chill when you get excited LOL lets us know what you find!!
