First off, these pipes are LOUD AF!! (Love them!!)
I'm at 4500' in elevation. I just installed the max performance kit with the straight cut pipes in cerakote black and the velocity stacks. I throughly cleaned my carb, replaced every O-Ring and gasket. Made sure all of the paths were clear by blasting them out using carb cleaner. None of the jets were clogged. Everything was in great shape except for a bit of debris in the bottom of the float bowls (fine sand) which I cleaned out. The bowl gaskets looked like they were installed with a bit of RTV. Cleaned it all off with some orange degreaser and a fine wire brush. The carb looked nearly brand new by the time I was done with it.
It idles just fine without the choke on, although the pipes got HOT! Much hotter than I was expecting. It was about 90 out today so I didn't really need the choke.
There is zero ticking coming from the exhaust gaskets. It sounds great.
On the test ride, the pipes heated up so much that through my jeans, my leg could barely take the heat. The bike pops on deceleration out of the pipes, then stops when I'm doing about 30 in 2nd gear. Also pops a bit when shifting. It does not pop when accelerating. It just doesn't accellerate very well. Most of the power I had before the changes is gone. Mid throttle, it's like it's studdering and isn't getting enough fuel. WOT is very lackluster and has lost most of its power that it used to have before making the changes to the carb.
My bike isn't a CA emissions bike, so there's nothing to plug.
OEM, it had 42 for the pilot jets, and 180 front / 175 rear for the mains. Mixture screws were at 1 3/4 turns out for the front and 2 for the rear. I had to drill the aluminum caps out to gain access to the screws, so I know they had never been messed with.
The parts I used from the performance kit:
Pilot jets: 48
Main jets: 195
1 shim added to each of the needles.
Each mixture screw is out 2 full turns
I was planning on dialing it up a bit and going with 52's for the pilots, 200's for the mains, and adding another shim to the needles.
Anybody have any advice for high altitude adjustments?
I know that when I get the carb dialed in I'm going to love the mods. Very important that people hear me before they can see me. Not possible with the baffled OEM pipes that were practically whisper quiet.
I have read the tuning secrets manual. From everything I can tell, it's running too lean, and considering my high altitude, I was hoping somebody that's at a similiar altitude ( 4500' ) can tell me what ended up working for them.
