Made a post lastnight but since deleted it and want to reword my issue.
The whole summer my 01 vlx 600 has been running great. Idles fine. Runs fine. Doesn’t stutter doesn’t hesitate. Picks up speed fine. Never had an issue. Even looked through the tuning guide and never noticed anything that is in there regarding lean or rich running issues. Let me start with this, where I’m located the average temp has been about 85 give or take. Took the bike out for a nice evening ride for about an hour or so. At the end of my ride the bike wanted to idle rough and had a slight surge. Idle was set to 1200. It’d go down to about 950. Then surge up to 1300ish. Got the bike home and decided to go through the steps. Checked fuel delivery (gravity fed) cleaned the lines. Cleaned my inline filter. Scoped the inside of the tank to see if maybe something was causing a blockage. All checked out and was good. Went for another ride and samething happened. After warming up idle wanted to drop/surge and stall out. This time it stalled out. Now I ripped the carb out and it was very clean. No varnish or anything. Went ahead and cleaned it while it was off. All passages clear all is good. I have a 142 main and a 50 pilot. Here we go again. Went for a ride and still samething previously. Checked plugs and they were black. Not wet. But black. Mind you I checked plugs just for shits and giggles about a month ago and they were almost perfect in color. Now I’m scratching my head and went down the rabbit hole of everything. Checked for vacuum leaks. All is good. Checked valve lash. They were slightly out of spec. Adjusted them and went on (I know it’s not valve lash related I am a auto mechanic and do valve adjustments quite frequently) no matter what I always triple check lash and compression tdc of the piston. Went ahead and got a rebuild kit for the carb since float bowl gasket was slightly dried and cracked. Got a new intake boot. New shorty choke knob. So on so forth. Checked float bowl amount with a piece of clear tube an drained the float. Gas is sitting right below the mating surface of the bowl to carb about 1-2mm. Now I have the same main jet and threw in a 48 pilot to see what happens. And yet again. Samething. Also want to add I never had an issue with the bike still running when fuel screw is screwed in all the way even with a new fuel screw and it turned all the way in and seated the bike still runs and doesn't stall due to fuel cut.
Now on to electrical. Maybe heat is causing weak ignition/charging bad battery? Checked volts on battery when warmed up and it read 14.9v so yeah alittle bit high. Now deciding whether or not to check out charging system. Coils wires etc. anything helps but I’m about done throwing parts at it just for shits an giggles. Yes it’s not the right way to diag but it is was it is. Sometimes I got nothing better haha
