just picked up my 88 vt1100. the guy said he ran it out of gas and now it stumbles on acceleration and giving it gas in neutral. it will also back fire during cranking sometimes. but it will also start just fine and rev without issue at all. i initially thought no problem. He picked up junk in from bottom of the tank. I'm going to go through the carbs with a rebuilt kit it will be good to go. but now that I know I can start it and rev it sometimes, I worry it's not a carb issue. so, can junk in the carb have an intermittent effect on acceleration/ starting? or do I have more diagnosing to do?
@william kolsky if you dont have a fuel filter, get one. Otherwise everytime you put that carb back in, you'll likely have another issue. diagnosing via the internet is really really really difficult. i dont have a holistic picture of the bike to work with and i cant see or hear or experience whats going on. it could be a lot of things with the fuel delivery, tank vent, fuel pump, hoses deteriorating, hoses pinched intake boots not sealing, slide diaphragms compromised, wrong jetting, wronmg float heigh, bad eptcock valve, bad spark plugs, ignition wires, resistance caps, coils etc. the diagnostic tree is fuel, spark and compression, rebuild and restore each system perfectly and you'll eliminate issues to find the problem.
