VT600 Rear wheel Damper rubber

  Do these ugly rubbers have to be there (and be fresh rubber) or can they be chopped?

  Some say they affect bearing play, but I can not see how that would work, because the bearings seem to be retained by the cast metal part, as they should be.

  Oh I think I get it now, the 4 straight divider parts in the wheel slide in between the rubber asscheeks, right?
