Carb leaking into cylinders, bad..

  • Got a 2002 vlx600 about a few weeks ago, finally started riding it. Now sometimes after a little ride the next day when I go to start it, the cylinder or cylinders are full of gas and it pours out of the boot burner style exhaust onto my driveway. It has a tj performance kit, we've cleaned the carb very well, checked the float and it seemed fine. I'm 2 oil changes down now within a weeks time. The petcock is very finicky and only turns completely off on a very small spot. Found this out when we pulled the tank to clean debris. If anyone knows of anything it could be, I would greatly appreciate it.. we're stumped on this build. EDIT: also after watching some tj vids, I noticed just now that my air cut valve wasn't plugged. Not sure if that would cause this issue.

  • @Cody Hamilton go fix the acv issue then get back to us! =)

  • @TJ so, I plugged the acv, I also plugged the brass nipple on the rear of the carb, previous owner had the vacuum line from the afp leading to it. (Rear cylinder has always been plugged). Then we removed the afp completely and ran a straight line from tank to the carb. I also took the carb apart and polished the needle seat, the needle and the bar hinge the float swings on. Everything sealed and moved perfect. It was spotless. Put it all back together and now even when the bikes off, it just pours gas out of the bowl vent. Idk what to do at this point man.

  • @Cody Hamilton we need pictures man. theres some nipples you dont want to plug lol

  • @TJ for some reason it wouldn't let me post pics directly on mobile. But here you can see what is plugged. The bowl vent is not plugged. https://imgur.com/a/YTC977Ohttps://imgur.com/a/YTC977O

  • @TJ also ordered a new float needle, float and hinge. Could the carb be getting too much fuel pressure not allowing the needle to seat?

  • hey my bike just caught on fire 12 months ago i now have it runing but only on 2 cylinders to start with i hade fule pooring out carby so iput a fule pump onto it and that stoped that out but know find only the front 2 cylinders geting spark ive checked coils leads and splugs there all allgood what do i do next

    Send feedback

    1.

  • @alex swindell what kind of bike is it? Mine is single carb, and doesn't have a fuel pump or any fuel regulator.

  • Hey bro, I'm not with TJ, but did you set the float at 9.2mm?!?  I had a similar issue.  I used a little metric ruler and went just under 10 mm, and my bike stopped pissing fuel out of the top.  ALSO, 2002 tank may have excessive rust.  That rust turns to sand, and it clogs up everything.  When it passes your in line, ALL bad.  That may be your issue with the petcock (it can also give you issues with the pump).  I just red koted my tank and replaced my petcock.  So, can't give you a thumbs up just yet, but my inline filter is clean, so far.  On that, try a clear plastic in line from O'riellys or autozone so you can see what is coming out of your tank.  Hope this helps.

  • @Richard Thompson thanks for the reply, so far we've cleaned the tank. Pulled it and cleaned it completely. It wasn't in that bad of shape surprisingly. Removed the afp, straight hose from tank in/off valve to the carb. As for adjusting float height I've not done. I didn't think it was adjustable. There isn't a metal tang for adjusting. I have a new needle, float, and hinge coming Monday. Really hoping that helps. How did you adjust yours? Just bend the plastic?

  • Ah F, bro.  Sorry, I ride am 1100.  Yeah, I have the tang that can be adjusted.  Hopefully, a new float and needle does the trick for you because it does sound like your needle is staying open.

  • @Cody Hamilton youre running a pod. my brother in christ please read this - https://support.shoptjbc.com/article/26-pod-pancake-and-cone-filters

Youre gonna have a real hard time tuning with that thing with a pod. I suggest you get rid of that and then move forward.

also, you need a hose on the float bowl vent because no vent can result in a fluctiating vacuum condition depending on what wind blows across the hole, you need a tube on it.  5-6 inches will do it. watch the carb rebuild video below to see how to properly set up the carb.

you cannot adjust the float height on a single carb.

you also cannot replace the float needle seat on a single carb, but you can make it better - this video will show you how. - https://youtu.be/tgndZJoyex0?si=t0XVJ-akpmW1vbw0

  • @Richard Thompson an 1100 is a different setup than the single carb vt600, unfortunately not apples to apples LOl

  • @TJ I get that, also would a pod filter cause it to flood just sitting there off? Like I turn the fuel on and it goes to the cylinder 7/10 times. I'll run a hose off the bowl vent also. I just don't understand how this could happen with the bike just sitting there.

  • @Cody Hamilton did you follow the video on how to clean your float seat??
