SOLVED! SCROLL TO END FOR SOLUTION.
Hello all!
hoping to get some advice or ideas on what's become a head scratcher for me. I am working on my old 05 Honda shadow aero 750. I've added the velocity stack, the high low drag exhaust with 4" baffles, a TJ brutal customs carb rebuild kit. I started with a 50 pilot jet, 2 shims on the needle, and a whatever tj recommended on the main in his video lol I can't remember now! Currently I still have the 2 shims I am at a 32 pilot jet and running a 135 main jet. Anything above 1/4 turn on the throttle is smooth and perfect feeling. Idle is good and up to a 1/4 turn feels good but I am getting little puffs of black smoke and blackened plugs at a 32 pilot! The bike is acting rich at a 32. I can turn the adjustment screw (tj adjustment screw from the kit) all the way in or out and it makes no difference - does not affect bike or idle at all.
does anyone have any advice on this or ideas? The choke is a tj shorty choke. There are no vacuum issues and the float needle works perfectly. I can not figure this out I have checked everything I can think of 10 times.
thanks,
allen
@Allen Jarmolinski first, I actually made an e-book that covers everything you'd want to know about tuning. so id suggest reading this first - Here's the link! -https://shoptjbc.com/blogs/news/performance-tuning-book-lp
you are way too lean for stacks and open pipes it sounds like the carb has a blocked passage, maybe a torn diaphragm, a vacuum leak, there maybe a passage on your carb you blocked that shouldnt be or one thats not blocked that should be. i hear from people all the time that have your same issue and unfortunately no one ever replies when their problem is fixed, but 90% of the time its installer error, or they missed something on the reassembly process or theres a vacuum leak. if you havent replaced the inatake boot, you really should do that. then go from there.
@TJ There is one thing I know for certain. I am 100% sure this is installer error. I did replace the intake boot. I followed the 4 part you tube video to rebuild the carb but at this point I think it's time to take it off and rebuild it again. I just downloaded the tuning book and am waiting for it to arrive in my email. Will reply when I fix this thing.
SOLVED
wanted to write and say what solved my particular problem in case someone else expierences the same problem and maybe wants to give this a try. Not that it will work it for you but who knows.
so I rebuilt the carb again and could find nothing wrong with it but it was a good opportunity to make sure every pathway was cleaned with carb cleaner and compressed air. Who doesn't like a good blow. I (being in south Florida) am at sea level or arguably below. So I started as suggested by the tj YouTube video with a 148 main and a 48 pilot and 2 shims on the needle.
put the carb back on the bike and still rich AF (not Air Fuel but as fuck). If not richer than before.
then I decided to make changes 1 at a time like a smart person and not the idiot that I am 99% of the time. The first thing I tried is I simply removed the 2 shims that's it and then started the bike to see what happens.
Anti climatic ending here I know: that was it. 2 shims gone bike functions perfectly, 2 turns out on the mixture screw 48 pilot. She runs like a graped ape no black smoke and good looking plugs. Fuel efficiency has returned as well.
@Allen Jarmolinski THANK YOU SO MUCH! Thanks for posting how you solved the issue!!!
