Vt600 HELP

  • Hello I have a question, I just bought a 1995 Honda Shadow VLX600 from my grandpa and it has been garage kept. It has 14,000 miles on it and has been sitting for almost 3years. The bike is dead except for the neutral light on. I looked in the gas tank and It has a blood rust on the inside. The main reason I'm here is to ask, what should I do to get this bike back up and running again without hurting it? I know it needs a new battery, just not sure if I should do anything else.

  • @Will Stocking well heres what id do, dont try and start it.  its bone dry.  pull the carbs and rebuild them. replace the intake boots, theyre 30 years old, once you pull the carbs out of the boots they will not seal again. If you dont replace them, its highly likely you will have issues with tuning and replacing the intake boots, rules out vacuum leaks at the inatake boots.

Drain the oil, fill with new oil and new filter. for the rust in the tank,  if you cant effectively and positively remove ALL the rust from the stock tank, youll need to replace the tank. if you can, youll probably want to pull the petcock and clean that out as well.

you can bypass the fuel pump and run the fuel line straight to the carb but make sure you have a fuel filter in the line.
Next, pull one spark plug from each cylinder and spray some wd-40 in there. pull the crank inspection cover and roll the engine over by hand a dozen times and then let that sit for a day or two. at this time you can replace the spark plugs, make sure you gap them properly.

you may also need to replace the ignition wires. if theyre hard, replace. we do have an ignition kit that includes the resistor caps, wire and spark plugs, and we also have a video on youtube that shows you how to replace the ignition wire.
next, I'd replace the chain. i wont mess with one thats been sitting and on a bike that only has 14,000 miles. its 30 years old, no point in risking it.

next id replace tires. if a tire goes out on a car, you can skid to a stop, on a bike, if you lose a tire, you end up using your skin to stop. lol!

once you've done all the above you can get the bike running, and at that point you can , drain the coolant, refill, and burp the system.

    hope this helps!

  • Thank you so much!
