Misfires of Back cylinder

  • Hey Guys, I am Flo from Austria, Europe and i ride a 88 VT600 dual carb.

I bought the Dual Carb Rebuild and tuning Kit and the Velocity Stacks from TJ. Mountet it on my bike and it started right up. Did everythin like told in the instruction video. Now i have a lot of Misfires but only at the rear cylinder. there is also smoke coming out of the velocity stack of that rear cylinder sometimes there are also coming small flames out of it. i changed the spark plugs, the ignition coil, the ignition cables and the spark plug connector. New gaspump, filters and cleaned out the tank. i´ve checked the compression on both cylinders-->OK.  tried to chandge the mixture with the the Handle Mix Screw. I have open pipes on my bike.

i don´t know what else i could try. Maybe you can help me out.

    Thank´s a lot!

  • I had this happen with my bike too. I didnt find a fix for it, but I also didnt look very hard lol. Good luck I hope you have better luck than me!

  • @Florian Rädler

Hey man! thanks for posting a great question!
Alright first off heres a list of lean vs rich conditions that will definitely help you in the tuning process and help guide you in the right direction so you're not just throwing money at the bike hoping it fixes itself.

    Lean Mixture Symptoms -

1 - It is difficult to apply the throttle quickly or the engine picks up speed when the throttle is rolled off.

2 - The engine knocks or Pings or overheats.

3 - The engine surges or hunts for a stable RPM while cruising at part throttle.

4 - Engine acceleration is flat or slow to pick up.

5 - When the pilot circuit is too lean, there will be popping or spitting in the carburetor as the throttle is opened. Sometimes there will be popping or after fire in the exhaust on deceleration after the throttle has been closed.

6 - Engine performance improves in warmer weather, or runs poorly in cold weather.

7- Engine performance worsens when intake is removed.

8 - Baked white and flaky spark plugs.

     Rich Mixture Symptoms -

1 - Engine acceleration is flat, uneven, not crisp.

2 - The throttle needs to be opened continuously to maintain consistent acceleration.

3 - The engine performs poorly when the weather gets warmer, or the engine works better in cold conditions.

4 - Black smoke coming out of the exhaust.

    5 - Poor fuel economy.

6 - Engine performance improves when the intake is removed.

7 - When the pilot circuit is rich, the engine will idle roughly, or not return to idle without blipping the throttle, the exhaust can smell of excessive fuel and burn the eyes.

8 - Black sooty or fouled spark plugs, black and sooty exhaust tail pipes.

all that being said, you didn't mention whether you have replaced the intake boots or not. You also didn't mention if you actually tuned the bike or just slapped some jets in there LOL!  Ya do need to tune and check the spark plugs to help determine whether you are running rich or lean, however before you can even do that, You really do need to replace the intake boots or you're chasing your tail. It sounds to me like you have a nice vacuum leak and its very likely coming from those intake boots. especially if they’re the originals. as the rubber gets older its way too hard to effectively create a seal anymore.

  • Hey TJ, thanks for that fast response.

I´ve replaced the intake boots, bought them at your shop as well. What do you exactly mean "tuned"? Put the Dual Carb Rebuild and tuning Kit and the Velocity Stacks in it, put straight pipes on it and replaced the spark plugs with NGK ones. Spark Plugs look good tho, in my oppinion...so you think i should have an eye on that intake boot of the rear cylinder? where else could i have a vacuum leak? man that drives me crazy 🤪

    thank you buddy

  • @Florian Rädler if you shoved the carbs in dry, they can tear the rubber of the boots, use a lil grease or wd40 on the intake boot and carb so they slide in. youll need to check the intake boots for tears or little pieces torn off, also, if the carbs arent seated perfctly flat tot he boots, then they will not seal.

The performance kits have multiple sizes of jets in them. You cant just slap any jets in there into the dual carburetors and expect it to work. start with the smaller jets and go from there. the previous message outlined rich vs leanmixture symptoms to hel you determine what to adjust. mix screws should be between 1 and 3 turns out. you need to make sure the jets used on each carb are the same size. the needles should have 2 shims under them as well and some ports on the carbs should be plugged while others shoudl not. the bowl vents and slide vents must be left open or have a open tube attached otherwise the bike wont run. all other ports can be capped off wih the vacuum plugs that come with the performance tuning kit.

  • @Florian Rädler Hi Flo, I had a similar Issue. My problem ended up being I had the Wrong Vaccum Ports Plugged. TJ Sells a Vaccum Plug Kit to plug these ports. However I had accidentally Plugged the two Top ports as seen in (picture.1) and left a Vaccum port on my rear carb (picture.2) Wide open causing my rear cylinder to run super rich shooting black smoke out the rear exhaust and smoke was burning my eyes and smelled of unburnt fuel. TJ has a video that shows all these Plugged in the correct order. THIS HELPED ME it's under his Playlist (Dual carb videos)  video title: Honda Shadow Dual Carb Secrets- Revealed! Just Pay attention to where he plugs things and doesn't and compare to your carbs. Hope this helps!https://youtu.be/S6o2wOMUbbo?si=qJYcufJ6jZevBdMK
