How do I know when my bike needs a new fuel pump?

I ride a Shadow VLX 600 (made in Brazil) and it's a excelente bike to run and to work on myself. I’m no mechanic, but I’ve managed to do a lot of the maintenance myself just by watching YouTube videos. But there's a part that I really worry about and I don't know when it needs to be replaced: the fuel pump.
I saw some videos of shadows in fire 'cause of this part. So, how can I know if I need to buy a new fuel pump? I don't want to just took it off, but I know it will not last forever and I want to see my bike in flames. Anyone have some tips?
