Are the gas caps on your peanut tanks interchangeable with harley gas caps?
@Evan Parson i dont believe so.
This might be irrelevant, but some era of Sportsters came with "metric" tanks (e.g. 22 mm threading for the petcock etc.). So if you ask your local Harley parts shop, they might possibly be able to find something that fits.
@andreas The gas tanks I make are not compatible with stock harley gas caps of any vintage. The petock bung is an 1/8" npt as well. so the 22mm petcocks found on harleys will not fit. sorry!
@TJ Yeah, I suspected it would be irrelevant indeed. I was just surprised to learn that there were Harleys with metric stuff on them.
@andreas Fun facts about metric stuff on domestic vehicles _
By the 1960s and 1970s, American automakers were increasingly competing globally and sourcing components internationally. Europe and Japan had standardized on metric fasteners and dimensions.
A bolt made in Germany, Japan, or France was metric. If an American manufacturer wanted to buy components worldwide, metric made life easier.
The U.S. government also encouraged metric adoption through the Metric Conversion Act of 1975, which declared metric the preferred system for trade and commerce, though it was voluntary.
