2001 honda shadow ace

  • I don't know how any of this stuff works but hopefully I can get some answers. I recently obtained a 2001 shadow 750 ace. The motorcycle sat for about 5 years. I know it turns over bc I put power to it. Now it sat with about quarter tank of gas. The tank is rusted on the inside, the petcock was seize and filled gunk, the fuel filter seemed usable but not the best, and the fuel pump probably needs to be replaced. Now I know what to do with the tank, i need to order some stuff and what not. But I suspect the carbs are junky as well. I am planing on rebuilds them. Now here is my question. Should I waste my time all that? Is there a way to tell if the engine is still solid, I know it turned over but I didn't want to just run it bc of how long it had been sitting. I'm almost to the point of buying the kits that have the exhaust carb rebuilt, handle bars, and gas tank from here. I know it'll be a healthy amount of money but I just need some direction. Honestly this will be my first fixer upper that will require several things and I need some direction. Thank you in advance.

  • depends on how you feel about your mechanical skill and your wilingness to proceed. you could do a compresison test to test the engine.

  • @Gnomeskull it has good compression. I'm debating just replacing everything that has to do with fuel.

  • are your carbs getting fuel? and have you checked the inline fuel filter by the tank?

  • @Gnomeskull fuel filter is definitely better than what I expected. What I suspect happened was the bike was running 5 years ago, the petcock got set to off and over time the fuel got all gunked up in ther. I know some fuel dripped out of it. Actually now that I think about it, the lines leading to the filter and out into the fuel pump had some fuel nothing significant.
