Valve timing Shadow Ace

  • I have a Honda Shadow Vt1100c2 ace. Ive attempted to rebuild this motor twice but each time ive attempted to set the timing there were major air leaks in both cylinders when i performed a leak down test. I suspect the timing because when i flip the heads over and fill them with water they dont leak and the valves appear to be straight and clean. Too many shims holding the valves slightly open or just improper timing? Thats debatable but Im Leaning toward timing any suggestins, tip, or comments would be very helpful at this point a shop is not an option. I either have to get it right or part it out. Sure an engine swap would fix it but I wouldnt learn from it and I could be inheritating someone elses problem. Just as an Fyi Ive had that clutch basket and primary gear out also and Im wondering if the primary gear was installed wrong, could that cause the valve timing to be off or open and close improperly?

  • @Douglas Kitchen someone else is gonna have to chime in here as i havent rebuilt an 1100 engine yet. ive done the 750's and the 600. even if the water test shjows no leaks, if it were me, id recut my valve seats, new valves, and rule that out completely. i had a similar issue with a VT600. never seen a 600 with unevenly worn valve seats, they showed sealed with water, but under pressure.... they leaked.
id also replace those rings to match the cylinder wear.
