2004 Honda shadow 1100 carb tuning

  • Hey all I have a 2004 Honda Shadow spirit 1100 that im doing some upgrades on and have some questions. Im going to run the velocity stacks, an aftermarket exhaust (more free flowing and sounds good just not fully open pipes). Im also doing the spaghetti (evap) delete. My first question is what do I need to block off on the carb? I have the 3 little ports blocked off but there is 2 bigger block plugs and im not sure where they go. I also am not sure what ports to leave open, re connect or block off on the carb. My second question is about tuning. So as I mentioned im doing velocity stacks, aftermarket pipes and I am at about 5000 ft elevation. The bike had 45 pilot jets and 175 for the mains. I put 48s for the pilot and im going to do the smallest jets in the kit which is 195s. I know there's no magic recipe for tuning but is that sounding right? Should I do spacers for the needles too? I do have a big trip, about 5 hrs that I was hoping to take the bike for in about 3 weeks so I need to get the bike dialed in sooner rather then later. Anyone have advice for tuning and at elevation? Thanks in advance for the help. I will try to upload some pics but this forum dosnt like my phone to much.

  • @Jesse Bolson ok you can pretty much block everything on the carbs except (obviously) the fuel nipple, and the bowl vbent and the slide vent.
tuning wise id start lean, youre at 5k elevation and will need less fuel than someone at sea level.

  • Hey quick update on my bike, I got the spaghetti delete done and Im happy with that. I got the velocity stacks in and the bike almost tuned up 100%. So currently I have the 198 main jet and no shims. The bike does really well around town but it does seem slightly slow in the mid range of throttle. It also tops out if I go to wot. I was going to put the 200 jets in and probably one set of shims for the needle. My question is; is it better to have access to more fuel or less? Like I said the bike runs great now but seems like it could use alittle more. Any help is appreciated. Also side note I think its super cool that TJ responds to these and actually helps the community out. He is not just a guy who makes YouTubes and sells parts, he seems like a genuine dude. I would love to run into TJ at a bike meet or meet him at a bar.

  • @Jesse Bolson hey dude bike is looking solid! The 1010 is a torque machine, not a top speed demon. around 4k that engine is making the best torque and then things flatten out. tuning just means getting the bike to perform ideally wher eyou want it to without being too rich or lean. you can tune a drag bike to run really well at WOT but not so great at idle. make sense?
