Dual Carb ports missing plugs

  • Picked up a 1985 and a 2000 Honda Shadow 1100 a few weeks ago with my buddy. I laid claim to the 2000 and am in the middle of rebuilding the carb now. I ended up picking up an all balls racing rebuild kit and sometime in the future will most likely be throwing in a TJBC rebuild kit when I put open pipes on it, alongside the velocity stacks.

Anyways, after pulling out the disassembled carbs from my ultrasonic, I noticed that some of the ports that are normally plugged on every other dual carb ive seen online (and the 85 my buddy is rebuilding) have been removed. I think whoever had the bike before me was trying to drill out the mixture screw plugs because I ended up drilling those out. I'll attach a photo just to be clear on what I'm referring to.

I was just curious if those being unplugged would be an issue. And if it will be, what could I use to replug them? I was thinking of maybe milling down a few dimes and punching them in, unless someone has a substantially easier idea.

  • Also, if anyone knows where I can get a good set of diaphragms for not an insane price, that would be cool. The kit I picked up did not come with them, and TJBC does not appear to sell them alone.

  • @Daniel well... firt, i would never recommend pull the bodies apart, thats not fun to get them synced up again.

and more bad news. yeah those carbs wont run as is. the holes that were drilled must be plugged AIRTIGHT you can try mixing up some JB weld, waiting till it gets harder and then carefully putting a SMALL plug over each drilled hole. ive had a few people find success with this. the key is not to put the wet jb weld in the hole and have it drip inside and clog the intersecting passage. then youre really up the creek. Yeah... someone really fuckered those carbs up. im sorry man.
if youre ambitious and have a mill and a decent level of skill, you could mill the holes open, CLEAN THE PASSAGES impeccably. then machine aluminum plugs that can be gently press fit into the holes... lota work though and you cant have an air leak at all. so your machined surfaces need to be impeccable.
we sell a complete rebuild kit that includes the diaphragms we do not sell them separately. im sorry.

  • @TJ I measured the holes with a caliper, one is 9mm and the other is 11mm. I just made some plugs to fit them about 2mm thick with my SLA printer, used some jb to form a seal around the edges and dropped them in. Seems to work real good, just need to get off my ass and put them back together and sync them up.

Im hoping the dude i picked the bikes up from didnt do anything crazy other than splitting the carbs and drilling out the wrong holes, but these new polymer plugs look fine.
