Starting issues 02 shadow 600

  • Recently bought a 02 vt600. Been sitting for 2 years in hot desert heat n sand storms. Bought a new battery, single carb rebuild kit and today it fired up for the first time. So much shit came out of the pipes. I'll attach the video. Anyways once it fired up, it idled and did a few throttle blips, and then died.tried to restart it for the length of the video plus an extra 10-15 seconds. At that point I had to recharge my battery. Put the tank back on in the mean time, then when the battery was done, I attached a jumper to the battery and pulled the spark plug out. Tried turning it over. No spark. Checked the coil, with the same set up mentioned above and it was reading .9 v going to the coil. Is the coil the issue. Jk the video is to large. My instagram has it on the main page the most recent upload. @yuung.abee

  • @Abram Grissom if its been sitting in the desert for 2 years you cant just try and fire it up dry. and if you didnt lose the piston rings, you may have damaged the cylinders firing it dry.
you have to prelubricate everything and then, and only after a few days of allowing the fluids to soak in, hand crank the engine. You need to replace the coolant, check that the thermostat isnt crusted shut, yes it happens. change the oil too maybe.

  • @TJ Oil changes were done on regularly it's actually looking like really good oil, smelled clean. Carb maintenance not so much. Had spark, lost it, got it back, fired it up ran for 30 seconds at idle then died. Checked for spark again and nothing, just got new ignition coils and wires. After I get these on there I'll check rectifier.

I will look into the coolant and thermostat. As I'm not sure where the thermostat is even at. This is my first big bike and am learning along the way.

  • She runs! Sounds so mean.
