Cleaning VT600 Fork Lowers

  • I’ve been rebuilding my ‘04 and it looks like the forks haven’t ever been taken apart so there’s lots of rust in the snap clip channel, not to mention the clear coat flaking off. I have a media blaster at work, but wasn’t sure if that would be too abrasive considering they are aluminum. Thanks in advance

  • Hey bro, I'm not with TJ, but there are a lot of media blaster tanks, sand or bead, with varying psi being pushed.  It may be ok, but to just remove the clear coat and be safe, maybe think of just wet sanding with 1000 grit or something less invasive.  Don't know what you plan with maybe refinishing your forks, but things like cerakote or even paint adds material and may make parts difficult to put back together.  Hope this helps.  Good luck

  • @Moses Parker do not media blast in the forks my friend! just clean it with gas, you can strip off the PVD coating with Premium stripper oir aircraft stripper if you can get it in your state, that wont hurt the lauminum, do not use ANY abrasives on the inside surfaces of your forks! ever! they wont seal ever again LOL!
you can paint and coat the outside all you want, you just tape off the iner surfaces wher eyour oil and sust seals and retaining clips go. remember, no abrasives my man!
