Issues getting VT750DC started and idling.....

  • Yo!!  My name is Dan and I own a 2001 Honda Shadow VT750DC.  I've bought and replaced almost everything on my bike in order to customize it.

After removing the air box and going with velocity stacks, making sure my exhaust is completely open, re-jetting my duel carb with 42 (idles) and 142 (mains), making sure my floats are functioning properly, etc. - I can't get the bike to fire and stay started.

I've replaced the spark plug wires, spark plugs, and the coil packs.

At first my issue was gas pouring through the cylinder and out the exhaust.  I figured out that issue as one of my float valves was not set properly (the tab was bent out of place).  Now, I've got a charged battery, good spark (tested off the side of the cylinder housing - all sparks white-ish blue), fuel to the carb, and it still won't start and idle.

Is there a starting point that I should set my idle screw to in order to help out with this?  It will fire (and I verified it's from both cylinders by checking for air from both exhausts), but when I give a little more gas it peters out.  It acts as if it's not getting enough fuel, but then when I crank on it a few times I will get gas come out and drip down the carb - letting me know it's flooded. I do still have my fuel pump hooked up and running........could this be an issue?

I know that I may have some tuning issues with my 1/4 throttle to 3/4 throttle which I can work out by manipulating the main jet size. but I've got to get it idling first.

Any help is greatly appreciated.  Thank you, God bless, and keep 'em two wheels down!

  • @Daniel Jones without pictures and a more clear picture of how the carb is set up its hard to tell.
    needle shimmed?
have you attempted adjusting the idle?
    does your choke work?
did you follow the videos on what to plug and what to NOT plug?
    Are your diaphragms good, torn?
does the bike kick off with starting fluid?
are the slide diaphragms seated properly under the slide covers?
have you replaced the intake boots? if youre using old ones, youll have too much vacuum leak to start.
have you tried using the larger jets in the kit? pilots may be too lean.
are the plugs wet after attempting to start? or are they dry?

  • also heres a free tuning ebook i wrote - this will help - https://shoptjbc.com/blogs/news/performance-tuning-book-lp
