First bike

  • recently bought this 04 Honda shadow 600 for my first bike for $2000. Needs some work, new chain, carb clean, and a couple other stuff before I start riding. I feel like I overpaid. Thoughts?

  • Honestly, not too awful of a price in my honest opinion.
From the picture it looks pretty clean, looks to have some pretty neat parts on it that would have cost the previous owner a decent penny.

I do however have one concern when looking at the bike in this picture and that's the tires.
The front looks to have little to no tread pattern left in the middle, and the back looks rather skimpy too in the center.
Meanwhile the sides look to have more flesh on em, indicating that this thing did a lot of miles going straight thus squaring out the tires.
I may of course be wrong and it my just be the image playing tricks on the eye, but I'd check it.

Also check the tires age via the DOT code that's on em.
    Usually looks something like this:

Make sure they are not too old either.
A lot of people will say 5 to 6 years is too old, but most manufacturers list 10 years as the age they should be replaced by.
I've personally ridden on tires of 9 years old and those were just fine, all be it not nearly as soft as new.

  • @Smeltie yeah you are 100% right on the tires. I have a shop not too far from here that has good pricing in my opinion for local owned. And I appreciate you giving your honest opinion. Like I said it's my first bike and I did do my research but it felt like the owner wasn't completely honest about everything needed to ride comfortably if you get what I mean

  • @Gaige Yeah, I getcha.
Just make sure to do your own basic checks as well.
plenty of good lists of things to check available.
