The previous owner wrapped the exhaust and left it for years. I unwrapped them and this is what it looks like:
. I've tried baking soda vinegar, bar keepers friend, 0000 steel wool, scotch bright pads, dawn, mothers aluminum/mag polish......I'm running out of options. Anyone seen this before? Any ideas are welcome.
@2002ShadowCS Dang that sucks man. unfortunately this is kinda what youre stuck with unless you want to take them to a chromer. the chrome has changed color. wrapping motorcycle exhuast is a stupid idea and heres why:
- its intended for cars. cars have an engine bay whewre heat soak kills performance. wrap helps keep that heat out of the nearby components and lowers under-hood temps. Motorcycles have open air exhaust, where air cooling is present. dont need insulation.
- wrapping motorcycle exhaust does something to the exhaust material on a molecular level. it subjects the exhaust to thermal stress. heating and cooling cycles, with an emphasis on the heat, and then when you stop the bike, the heat doesnt dissipate at a normal rate, instead its trapped in the pipes because of the wrap. the hastens the weakening of the metal over time.
- wrapping exhaust destroys the protective finish. Wrapping not only super heats the exhaust but traps moisture directly on the pipes. yes theyre hot, but if they get wet, not all the moisture is going to just magically evaporate from the wrap. It will ruin chrome and you are experiencing and it will cause exhaust to prematurely rust.
hope this helps you moving forward. Dont wrap your pipes! LOL
