2012 shadow spirit EFI, I'm going to change out the coolant soon and was wondering if I should drain, fill with water, run drain then fill with coolant? Or just drain and fill coolant?

@Alexander Wells you dont need to fill it with water in fact you shouldnt ever do that unless youre in the desert and theres NO other alternative. and then when you get home, you need to flush all the water out. plain water is bad. distilled water is ok but no you dont need to put anything in the bike but coolant.
The coolant that you put in your bike not only is a fluid design to resist Heat and it has a much higher boiling point than water it also has lubrication qualities which assist the water pump and all relative seals. putting water in the system is introducing minerals chlorine all kinds of shit that is very harmful to the cooling system of your bike. this is why when you fill a vehicle with coolant that's not mixed you mix it with distilled water which has no minerals there's nothing in distilled water it's just H2O.
Once you drain the coolant, whats more important is that you burp the system when you refill. air bubbles are not your friend. i do this on every bike when i change or drain the coolant.
you need this - t.ly/IRaE5 to perform the burping process and you can see the process on a number of youtube videos. i recommend using coolanol coolant in the hondas.
I was going to just use my airlift kit to get the air out of the system.
So when you say coolant flush what does that consist of?
@TJ Brutal I think what @Alexander Wells was trying to say was that he was going to try and flush the system with water before replacing the coolant in the system. Ive done this with a garden hose constantly running water into the cap and out the drainplug while a vehicle was running, may not get the whole system if your thermostat never opens tho.
I've seen coolant flush machines and processes for vehicles with contaminated coolant systems (oil cooler failure and mixes into the coolant system mostly). I would recommend just a drain and fill if you dont have catastophic failure of your coolant system (opinions TJ?).
I also wanted to piggyback on this thread and ask if there is a different filling process for the UCOR Tank?
Thanks
@Fatboyx yeah man, dont wanna run the hose through the system, ever. even if you have a "catastrophic" failure you dont want to put anything int he system but coolant or distilled water.
The ucor tank - just open the cap, fill halfway and screw it back on, easy peasy!
@Alexander Wells open thermostat housing, drain coolant from the drain plug on the water pump, be mindful, it will come out with some force. I plan for this. I loosen the bolt and let it drip out overnight. by the morning its usually low enough that when i pull the bolt out it doesnt spray all over me.
replace drain bolt.
use this - t.ly/BiDZI to fill and burp the system.
pour coolant in the funnel till it stops going down.
Turn the bike on, get to operating temps, keep filling up the funnel, periodically pulling the stopper to allow coolant to be drawn into the system, but don't let the funnel go dry.
basically you keep doing this until the system will not take any more coolant.
turn the bike off let it cool down, then with the stopper in the funnel you can remove the funnel and not spill everywhere. If your bikes coolant was green when you drained, then you are now good to roll.
If the coolant you drained was hersheys chocolate syrup, then at this point once the negine cools you would repeat this process. thats how to properly flush the system.
but do not ever put tap water in there.
@TJ I appreciate your response. Im sure you're aware, but support like this goes a long way in gaining/retaining me as a customer.
@Fatboyx im just having fun man! i hope it helps you on your journey!!! 😎
I did not know this since I plan on doing a coolant flush soon after changing my thermostat out this was a lot of helpful information in this post. Thanks guys!
I definitely appreciate the insight, I seen some people saying they ran distilled to ensure all coolant residue is cleaned out before filling system with coolant, if there's no need then I won't do that. Thanks again.
@Alexander Wells yeah theres no reason to do that unless you drained chocolate swamp water out of your bike and honestly at that point, id do a lot more than just a "flush with water"
